One of the ingredients that we include in HMN24 Flow is Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus). This is what we categorise as an emerging ingredient.
In science, this refers to a natural or synthetic substance that is gaining attention in research and development due to its potential benefits in various fields. These ingredients often show promise based on preliminary studies or traditional uses but require further scientific validation and exploration to understand their mechanisms and efficacy fully.
An ingredient that fits that criterion and shows sufficient early promise may warrant our choice for inclusion. In this case at present, it remains within our formulation and we hope that the body of research continues to positively grow.
So, what do we know thus far?
Recent research on Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) has increasingly highlighted its potential benefits for nervous system function, cognition, and cognitive performance, as well as its role in nervous system modulation. The active compounds in Lion's Mane, particularly hericenones and erinacines, have been shown to stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), which is crucial for neuronal survival and growth, thereby supporting healthy cognitive function and potentially mitigating cognitive decline associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's (Paassen, 2024; Basko & Dohmen, 2023; Banerjee, 2024; Kushairi et al., 2019).
Studies have demonstrated that Lion's Mane can enhance cognitive performance in various contexts. For instance, a pilot study indicated that supplementation with Lion's Mane improved cognitive function and mood in young adults, suggesting its potential as a cognitive enhancer (Docherty, 2023). Additionally, research has shown that Lion's Mane may have acute effects on cognitive performance, with participants reporting improved focus and mental clarity after consumption (Docherty, 2023; Monica, 2023). These findings are particularly relevant in the context of an aging population, where cognitive decline is a growing concern (Banerjee, 2024; Cornford, 2024).
Moreover, Lion's Mane has been associated with neuroprotective effects, which may extend to modulation of the nervous system. The mushroom's bioactive compounds have been found to exert anti-inflammatory effects and protect against oxidative stress, both of which are critical for maintaining neuronal health and function (Kushairi et al., 2019; Lew et al., 2020; Lin et al., 2023). This neuroprotective capacity is particularly important in the context of stress-induced cognitive impairment and mood disorders, where Lion's Mane may help to stabilize mood and reduce anxiety (Cortonesi et al., 2023; Chong et al., 2019).
In terms of circadian modulation (one of our key focuses), while direct studies are limited, the general neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing properties of Lion's Mane suggest a potential role in supporting circadian rhythms through its effects on neuronal health and function. The modulation of neuroinflammatory responses and promotion of neurogenesis may contribute to better sleep quality and cognitive function, which are often disrupted in individuals with circadian rhythm disorders (Paassen, 2024; Basko & Dohmen, 2023; Kushairi et al., 2019).
In conclusion, the body of evidence supports the notion that Lion's Mane mushroom has significant potential to enhance nervous system function, cognition, and cognitive performance while also offering neuroprotective benefits that may aid in nervous system modulation.
Further research is warranted to fully elucidate these effects and their mechanisms of action.
